The king of Bengali nonsense rhymes - Sukumar Roy.

150th Post :

My tribute to Sukumar Roy.

Acclaimed as the king of Bengali nonsense rhymes, Sukumar Roy (born :  30.10.1887) was not only a great writer, but who showed excellence in humorous illustrations with his wonderful 'creations'. His style of writing poses a difficult task for the translators of his works - even today!

Sukumar formed a home-based nonsense club in Kolkata which used have its sittings every Monday. He named the club as "Monday Club", which was later nicknamed as "Mondaa Club" that hinted of sweetness (Mondaa) in all its agendas. A student of Presidency College, Calcutta (now Kolkata), Sukumar became the joint secretary of Sadharan Brahma Samaj in 1914.

Though his legendary 'creations' like Abol Tabol. Paagla Dashu, Khaai Khaai, HaJaBaRala are still hot favourite with the general mass even today, sheer misfortune deprived him to see even his 1st printed book, Abol Tabol before he breathed his last. Sukumar died at a tender age of 35 years 10 months on 10.09.1923, of Leishmaniasis, an infectious fever, for which there was no cure during that time. His 1st book was published on 19 September, 1923 - nine days after he left us for ever.

His influence on my writing is enormous and here is my humble tribute to the great post on his birthday, 30 October. Here too, I am late by 2 days. My apologies to my Guru, Sukumar... and to you all.

Happy viewing.
