Rabindranath Tagore, Sukumar Ray and nonsense poems.

Tagore, Sukumar Ray and nonsense poems.

The legendary poets, Rabindranath Tagore and Sukumar Ray have always been my inspiration in the world of Bengali literature. While Rabindranath made his presence felt in almost all streams of Bengali literature, Sukumar was popularly known for his Bengali nonsense verses/rhymes/poems with illustrations, though he had written quite a substantial number of dramas, scientific articles and prose pieces of general interest.

Rabindranath was a small boy of 8 years when he penned down his 1st poem : "Aamsatya dudhe phelee, taahate Kodolee dolee...". He didn't give the poem much credit, because he felt, it was not mature enough in reflecting his style or depth. The very first recognition he gave to his 'creation' was in the form of Bhanusingher Padabalee, written at the age of 16.

On the other hand, Sukumar had two of  his articles published at a very young age in a magazine called "Mukul", founded and published by the great author and social reformer, Pt. Shibnath Shastri. The 1st accomplished poem of Sukumar Ray is claimed to be "Khichooree" in Abol Tabol published in 1914 when he was only 27. There has been no looking back since then and the Bengali literature got continuously enriched through Sukumar's immortal creations !

I have ever considered Sukumar as my mentor and Guru and I dared to sketch my 1st poem at the tender age of 8 years. Though it may appear to be a little immature or childish, but its creation at that young age still surprises me even today! And incidentally, Pt. Shibnath Shastri chaired the post of the 1st Headmaster of my alma mater, South Suburban School (Main) at Bhowanipore in South Kolkata.

Today's posting presents the very 1st poems of both Rabindranath and Sukumar, along with my 1st and also a few of my nonsense yet funny poems, praising Sukumar Ray and his creations. Sukumar's photograph in the beginning has been procured from the Internet and the same is true for the photos of Rabindranath and Sukumar with the accompanying poems. I am indebted to their authors.

Happy viewing...
