OF MARRIAGE RITUALS & POEMS
Like any other wedding, the Bengali marriage too has its own style and rituals. Myriad formalities are carried out by the relatives and friends throughout the day before the final ceremony takes place in the evening. Various gifts (called "Tatwa" in general) for the bride and their family members are arranged in trays & thalis in a nice manner in the groom's place, which are subsequently sent to the bride's house along with an identifying tag (Tatwa Suchee) with each item. Just the opposite is done at the bride's house as well.
These gifts are exchanged at a suitable time of the day between the respective houses as a token of good gesture and in turn, is believed to build a strong bonding between the two households. Unfortunately, the traditions are getting modernized and I apprehend, these may not continue for long unless we want them to stay !
During the wedding of one of my friend's son, I was asked to produce some poems/verses/rhymes as accompaniment with the gifts and I wrote a few lines for them. The poems are just ordinary by standard and were written in a hurry. However, I am happy to share these pieces with you...

I have always seen the family members taking great interest in these poems and preserving them on the rare occasions when these were sent along with "Totto". Like may others, it is also becoming a dying tradition, because of lack of skill and more importantly, time. Simple emotions conveyed in simple words make these poems so enjoyable and often memorable.

DeleteSourajit, I am indeed happy that the simple poems caught your fancy. Indeed, like many other things like "Kolkapaata-e komore gaamchha/towaale bendhe poribeshon, baarite Viyen boshaano ityadi" are gradually being lost from Bengali lives. If my efforts to revive even a part of it become successful, my Blog-posting would carry meaning! Thanks.
